DREAM KEEPERS – New Mexico Martin Luther King Jr. Commission Youth Ambassador Program

The Dream Keepers Program helps empower youth to gain an appreciation for community service through teamwork. Dream Keeper’s involvement helps youth make choices that will have a positive impact on their lives. Service projects are a reflection of the talents and dedication of the team.

Tutorial Programs, neighborhood clean-up, and feeding the hungry are examples of some of the projects. Regardless of the type of the project, the central theme of joining together to build up the community must always shine through.

PROGRAM GOALS

1. Inspire youth to undertake community service projects and activities to help others
2. Encourage youth to embrace nonviolence for settling disputes
3. Provide youth with an alternative to negative influences
4. Help youth realize and fulfill their ability to bring healing and hope to their families, schools, and communities

To be a Dream Keepers Member, each youth must:

• Sign and take a nonviolence pledge
• Pledge to be drug-free
• Commit to promoting human equality
• Perform Commission-approved community service projects

Establishing Dream Keepers:

New Mexico Martin Luther King Jr. State Commission (MLKJRC) Dream Keepers function as teams. These teams are formed through pre-existing groups such as student organizations, sports teams, church groups, auxiliaries, community-based organization etc. Each team must have a designated lead specific to Dream Keepers activities. The Dream Keeper team leader will serve as liaison between the Dream Keeper team and the NMMLKJRC. When appropriate, the adult sponsor may also serve as the team leader.

• Teams must be connected to an existing community-based organization, student organization, church, school, etc.
• In New Mexico, team members must be between ages 5-24. For youth under age 11, projects must be operated through school or an organization with an adult sponsor.
• The Team Leader must demonstrate leadership in the community and must be at least 21 years old.
• Teams must submit monthly community service reports to the Commission.
